Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis, is the story of a young boy living in Michigan during the Great Depression. After staying in an orphanage and a foster home, Bud strikes out on his own in hope of finding his father. In spite of some sad and even cruel situations that Bud experiences, the story is ultimately funny, hopeful and optimistic. This book won the Newbery Award for excellence in children’s literature and is keeping the fifth grade enthralled.
Another reason the fifth grade is captivated by Bud, Not Buddy is the excellence of their reader: Julie Gral. Julie is the mother of fifth grader, Robby, and the students love her. Hmmm-one reason could be that she sometimes brings in treats for them, like today’s chocolate covered marshmallow rabbits. Here are a few of them with Mrs. Gral after enjoying their snack. 🙂
